Hampi- The
Fabled City. Ancient Ruins of an Empire.
Ruins can be just that – ruins. Or they
can be spectacular. That’s Hampi. A city
traveler once wrote as “ what I saw….
seemed as large as Rome and very beautiful to
the sight…. the best provided city in the
world” – Domingo’s Paes
Portuguese visitor to Hampi, 1520-22…
Now a UNESCO declared World heritage
center, one of India’s unique dynasty, the
city of ruins stretches over 70 sq kms in an incredible
outer space landscape of rocks pilled in fantastic |

alignments, and valleys. In solitude
and silence, desolate yet fascinating. And meandering
through is Tungabhadra, the sacred river referred
to as the Ganga of the South. Here the very stones
speak: myths, deeds of valour, legends have been
etched by scribes and sculptors everywhere
|
|
There
are innumerable temples, some seem to have
been “built like giants and finished
like jewels” Awesome monoliths, musical
pillars, soaring towers, wonderfully preserved
elephants stables, stepped bathing tanks,
the unusual Queen’s bath with its
Indo-Saracen architecture, Lotus Mahal with
its beautiful arches, royal dwellings, pillared
pavilions, stone chariot…. the incredible
Hampi Bazaar… |
